In past times, before great schools became common, everyone in the community raises the child. While that may not be the same anymore, good teachers have been able to maintain their role in being part of child development although in much more subtle ways. Everyone has a story to tell about how their teachers influenced their present thought pattern, position in society among many others. It might be due to the nonchalance or seeming strictness of the teacher, extra attention given by the teacher, empathy and compassion of such teachers and the likes.
Good teachers cannot be difficult to identify. While definitions may vary based on individual expectations and differences in value, some qualities stand out as being the general basis for such identifications.
While it’s true that a child has to be provided with all the necessities for sound quality education such as well equipped labs, stocked libraries, improved classrooms and a conducive learning environment, it is the responsibility of a good teacher to create a positive learning environment. Having perfect classrooms do not make a great school, good teachers do. From setting up ground rules to improve student behaviour and ensuring the students find enough encouragement to take their minds off life’s distractions to focus on the class falls on these teachers.
Negligent supervision of students by teachers in the classrooms can affect the child’s view of harmony and healthy competition in the future. The classroom comprises students from various homes with different views about life and interpersonal relationships. Due to the varying backgrounds, some of these students do not have enough skill to relate well with their classmates and this can lead to conflict. Good teachers always deliberately take special care not to hurt the feelings of any student or cause rivalry and offence when making comments or settling inter-student disputes.
Students spend most of their active time in school, interacting with other students, teachers and other school staff. In some cases, these teachers tend to give the most support and drive for students’ creativity. The covid-19 pandemic positioned parents to provide more encouragement and support to their child’s development but teachers are able to provide balanced support and appraisals. Most times this balanced approach is because the teacher has little or no stake in the child other than producing academically sound students that parents and school authorities approve, and would forever be proud of.
Teachers often choose their professions because of their love for positively impacting children – the future. While there’s no doubt that some teachers didn’t choose the profession but found themselves as full-time teachers due to occurrences beyond their control, we have examples of some who have eventually come to love what they do.
Good teachers provide a balanced level of support for students. They understand that healthy competitions are necessary for a child’s creative growth and success. The students might fail at some tasks and make mistakes but failures don’t affect such teachers. Good teachers are dedicated to raising motivated students who are not scared of making mistakes and taking their stands. These students go on to being successful individuals proud of who they’ve become.
